What is it about?

Red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy and photobiomodulation, is a therapeutic technique that uses wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to treat skin problems, such as wrinkles, scars, and persistent wounds, as well as other conditions such as joint, tendon and muscle pain and many others.

In the early 1990s, red light was used by scientists to help plants grow in space. Scientists found that the bright light from red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) helped promote the growth and photosynthesis of plant cells.

The researchers found that it was an effective way to treat muscle atrophy, slow wound healing, and bone density problems caused by weightlessness during space travel.

How does red light therapy work?

Red light produces a biochemical effect in cells that strengthens mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell – it is where the cell’s energy is created. The energy-transporting molecule found in the cells of all living things is called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

By increasing the function of mitochondria with red light therapy, a cell can make more ATP. With more energy, cells can function more efficiently, regenerate and repair damage.
